Losing control at the steering wheel while navigating a bend is an error that can have dramatic consequences! Car safety technology has already made major advances towards reducing these kinds of accidents. GPS equipment can already warn us when we are approaching a bend, helping us to turn the wheel firmly at just the right moment. However, if the radio is on too loud or the kids are squabbling on the back seat, we might not hear all of the information we are given.
Turkish researchers at the University of KoƧ are aware of the problem and have developed a vibrating wheel. The GPS is hooked up to small motors in the steering wheel that vibrate, just like a mobile phone, when a bend is coming up. The part of the wheel that vibrates corresponds with the direction that needs to be taken. Both left and right parts vibrate at the same time before a roundabout. Initial testing of the prototype has been successful.
